Moving guide
How to prepare for movers
A moving quote is only as accurate as the details behind it. Twenty minutes of preparation before you request help means the price you hear is the price that holds on the day.
Before you request a quote
- 1
Decide what is actually going
Walk each room and separate what you are taking from what is being sold, donated or hauled away. Movers quote on what moves — a smaller, decided load is a cheaper, faster day.
- 2
Measure the big pieces
Note the dimensions of sofas, beds, wardrobes and appliances, and the doorways, stairs and tight turns they must pass through at both homes.
- 3
Write down access at both ends
Floor level, elevator or stairs, how far the truck can park from the door, and any time restrictions the building or street imposes.
- 4
Set your real dates
A firm move-out and move-in date, plus whether either is flexible, changes which crews are available and what the job costs.
- 5
Photograph valuables and condition
Quick photos of furniture, electronics and anything fragile give you a record before anything is wrapped or carried.
What to tell the moving company
- Home size (studio, 1-bed, 2-bed, house) and roughly how much is furnished
- The large or heavy items: piano, safe, appliances, sectional sofas
- Access at both addresses: stairs, elevator, long carry from parking
- Your move date and whether it is fixed or flexible
- Both ZIP codes — where you are moving from and where you are going
The local moving request form asks for these details once, so you do not repeat yourself to every company. Moving further? The same preparation applies to long-distance moves.
